Our Coaches/Owners

What is your coach doing to stay abreast of the latest information/training methodology?

Our coaches strive to achieve and maintain the highest level of expertise in traditional and cutting edge coaching methodologies, through reading, podcasts, and attending/hosting coaching seminars and symposiums. Additionally, we continue to compete nationally and internationally on the Masters Weightlifting circuit, where we have the opportunity to meet and interact with a number of the best coaches, as well as top weightlifting officials, in the world.

Melissa Doherty, MD

Co-Owner and Head Coach

Melissa is an Emergency Department Physician and life-long athlete and self-proclaimed gym rat. Her experience spans a number of athletic endeavors. She earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do at age 17, competing in numerous local and regional competitions, and serving on a West Coast Demo Team which participated in a number of festivals up and down the west coast. She briefly taught Tae Kwon Do and women’s self-defense classes in the Portland area. She was a firefighter and paramedic from age 23-33, and did a great deal of weight training, cycling and running during that career. She went back to medical school at age 33, and ended up running 10 marathons and countless 10Ks and half marathons during medical school and residency, including qualifying for and running the Boston Marathon twice, in 2007 and 2011. In 2011, she discovered CrossFit, and, shortly thereafter, weightlifting. She is a USAW Advanced Sports Performance (Level 2) Coach and writes all of the programming utilized by our athletes. She spends countless hours studying the classical programming and training literature, facilitated by her undergrad degree in Biology and her deep understanding of anatomy and physiology learned in medical school. She is constantly striving to expand her fund of coaching knowledge through podcasts, ongoing study of the literature, and attending seminars and courses. She serves as the lead coach at Eastside Barbell, along with partner, Lauren.
